Animals, MUSIC and Science

There have been various studies, carried over the years, on the impact music has on animals. Here are some intriguing discoveries, you may find useful for your own pets!

  • Different animals react to different types of music, just like us – humans. Furthermore, several separate researches have proved that they respond better to music, written specifically for them, mainly in terms of tempo, similar to their heartbeat and/ or the sounds they make, or such that surround them in their natural habitat. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has defined this as 🐾‘animal-specific music’🐾. And temperamental creature, like CATS 🐈‍⬛, are particularly ‘moved’ by such music.
  • 🐕‍🦺🐩🦮 Dogs are Soft Rock and Reggae fans! The Scottish SPCA and University of Glasgow carried out a research on how men’s best friend reacts to music genres and they had clear winners. Smooth and rhythmic tracks resonated with them the most. In addition, music and white noise have been proved to reduce barking and anxiety when dogs are in a stressful environment, because it partially blocks other, more disturbing for them sounds.
  • Electronic music repels 🦟 mosquitos 🦟, as it interferes with their buzzing sound – an integral part of their mating behavior.
  • According to Harvard University, parrots 🦜 & 🐒 apes can definitely keep to a beat! Their research found that agile animals, as well as those, capable of vocal mimicry, demonstrate a good sense of rhythm too.
  • 🥛🐮 Cows give more milk when they listen to relaxing music like calm classical music. A study, carried out by the University of Leister, reported a 3% increase in milk production during the time, when cows were exposed to soothing melodies.
  • 🐊 Crocodiles appreciate classical pieces too, according to a research into the life of alligators.
  • 🐷 Pigs show a keen interest in music! You’ve probably heard about the many similarities between swine and humankind, and here’s one more. Wonder if pigs make good pets? Read this 🙂

Overall, animals respond differently to sounds and melodies, and do have their music preferences as well! Music can be part of your pets’ lives mainly as a way to calm them down.
