Getting a FISH TANK: What you need to know

Interestingly, the largest number of pets in the USA are aquarium fish, and not dogs, as commonly believed. In fact, they are more than dogs and cats combined, with 2024’s Domestic Animal Ownership Statistics showing Americans own 139 million pet fish, 62 million dogs and 37 million cats. Even though more households have dogs than underwater animals, the majority own just a single ‘man’s best friend’. And those with aquariums, have ‘plenty of fish’, as this type of animal rarely lives alone and usually exists in shoals.

Thinking of getting a fish tank yourself?
Here’s what else you need to know before you decide:

Maintenance

Aquariums can be truly impressive, even mesmerizing, and add to a unique atmosphere! Moreover, Aquascaping is a form of art. And, if you too are fascinated by it, you can get your own fish tank and start mastering it! However, what you need to consider beforehand, is that this is a living art form, which requires constant maintenance. It involves not only feeding the fish and looking after the plants (if any), but also changing water regularly, cleansing filters, sustaining a certain temperature, measuring water hardness, pH levels and more. Your responsibilities would largely depend on the type of aquarium you pick…

Types of aquariums

The main varieties are FRESHWATER aquariums, which are easier to maintain, and SALTWATER aquariums, requiring a lot more time and effort. If you’re completely new to fish tanks, or have a busy lifestyle, you should start with a freshwater aquarium. And if you’re an experienced hobbyist, you can consider a BRACKISH aquarium, combining both freshwater and saltwater.

Alternatively, you can pay for professional help and regular maintenance.

Size and shape of fish tank

The most important factor when picking the size and shape of a fish tank, is the space you have for it. Aquariums should always sit on a flat, solid surface, far from direct sunlight and heating sources. Ideally, there should be a power plug nearby too, so you don’t have to use hazardous extensions. And keep in mind, that regular tanks with a rectangular shape are easier to clean and safeguard.

Safety

When picking what fish and plants you want in your aquarium, it’s essential you ensure they are all compatible! You should always consult a specialist beforehand.

In addition, if you have children and/ or other pets in the house, make sure the tank is secured and doesn’t pose a threat to anyone. The same applies to all the additives and accessories you’d need for the aquarium.

Going on holiday

Fish usually require less attention while you’re away, compared to other pets. Most fish can easily go for up to a week without food, however, it’s best to invest in an automatic feeder. Alternatively, you can ask a friend/ relative to feed them for you, or hire a fish sitter. Whichever you choose, you should always clean the aquarium at least 48 hours before going on holiday, ensuring the smooth adaptation of fish and their wellbeing during your absence.
